How does this compare to the old cluster? What will it be used for? Is it only for your department? What does it run on?

It's a different department. The new one is 20 dual Quad core nodes, each with 8GB RAM backed by 12TB (raw) of disk. Runs CentOS 5.1. Will run FLUENT, Abaqus, Materials Studio, LAMMPS, OOMFF and other bits. The old one beside it is 8 dual Pentium 4 nodes - similar to the JHRC one. A lot more kick, basically.
